Behind the scenes at Cass

Walk through the historic town of Cass any given day during the winter or spring, and you might think that everyone is off and taking it easy until the scenic railroad starts its season in May.

Tucked back along the railroad tracks, however, more than a dozen people work away through the ap- parent off-season in an unassuming building bearing the name “Cass Shop,” making sure the trains will be ready to roll come opening day.

“People think if you’re not running trains, you’re not doing anything. But this is when the real hard work happens,” said Fred Bartels, trainmaster at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park…
